Plastic Recycle Program

Advancing Horticulture Through Sustainability.
Whether you’re a grower, retailer, or environmentally conscious individual, you can make a difference. Together, we can reduce plastic waste and build a more sustainable future for horticulture and the planet.

At Garden City Plastics (GCP), we’re committed to shaping a greener future through innovative recycling initiatives. Since 2000, our Plastic Recycling Program has focused on creating a sustainable horticulture industry by promoting responsible plastic use and pioneering closed-loop recycling solutions.

Environmental Impact

Garden City Plastics, through our recycling program has achieved measurable success:
  • Over 1 million kilograms of plastic recycled.
  • Significant reductions in landfill waste.
  • Growing awareness of sustainable practices across the horticulture industry.

How Our Recycling Program Works

A History of Innovation
Garden City Plastics has been manufacturing pots and trays since 1975. Recognising the environmental impact of plastic, we launched our recycling program to reduce waste and conserve resources. In partnership with Norwood Industries and Polymer Processors, we’ve built a comprehensive system that transforms used plastics into new horticultural products.

Key Program Features
  • Collection and Sorting: Facilities for sorting PP5 (Polypropylene) and PS6 (Polystyrene) plastics.
  • Recycling and Reprocessing: Advanced technologies that reprocess used plastics into reusable materials.
  • Sustainable Products: Development of 100% recyclable products, including our innovative PS6 Cell Plug Trays.

Materials We Recycle

PP5 (Polypropylene)

This widely used material in plant pots, trays, and labels is the cornerstone of our closed-loop recycling efforts. Through our process, PP5 is collected, cleaned, reprocessed, and transformed into new horticultural products.

PS6 (Polystyrene)

Recent advancements allow us to include PS6 items like cell plug trays and punnets in our recycling stream. These materials are collected and reimagined into innovative, sustainable products.

How You Can Participate

Step 1: Sort Your Plastics
Separate pots and trays into PP5 and PS6 categories. Clean off any excess soil and stack neatly to maximise bin space and avoid contamination.

Step 2: Drop-Off or Collection
Drop-Off: Use one of our designated collection locations.
Cage Collection: Ideal for nurseries and large-scale growers (forklift required for collection).

Every clean and sorted item contributes to reducing plastic waste, conserving resources, and supporting a sustainable future.

Expanding Capabilities

In a significant development, the program has expanded its capabilities to include the collection and recycling of Polystyrene (PS6) products, such as cell plug trays and punnets. This expansion is made possible through investments in technology, collection methods, and new processing equipment. Garden City Plastics introduces a new range of Cell Plug Tray products that are 100% closed loop recyclable as part of the Plastic Smart Program, contributing to a sustainable and innovative future in the Australian Nursery and Garden Industry.

Partnering with Bunnings

Bunnings supports our program by collecting used plant pots, stakes, and labels at selected stores. This collaboration ensures these items are responsibly recycled.
