Closed Loop Recycling
Trusted Partners in Horticulture
Advancing Horticulture through closed loop recycling and product innovation.
Plastic Smart Program
The Plastic Smart Program, a collaboration between Garden City Plastics, Norwood Industries, and Polymer Processors, focuses on driving innovation and sustainability in the Australian horticulture sector. This joint venture aims to create an infrastructure that promotes the sustainable consumption and reuse of plastic within the industry and its communities.
Environmental Impact
Recognising the environmental impact of plastic in horticulture, the program was launched in 2020. Since then, over 1 million kilograms of plastic have been collected and recycled, thanks to the participation of more than 100 partners, 700 collection bin sites, and the free collection service by Garden City Plastics.
Community Engagement
To raise awareness, the program engages in community-based initiatives, including displays at events, conferences, radio interviews, and delegations to State Parliaments. Collaborations with 'Recycle Mate' and Greenlife Industry Australia extend the program's reach, educating stakeholders about the importance of sustainable practices.
Closed Loop Recycling Process
The Plastic Smart Program employs a closed-loop recycling process to minimise waste and maximise resource utilisation. The process involves collection and sorting of plastic products, recycling and reprocessing in specialised facilities, and sustainable product development by Garden City Plastics and Polymer Processors.
Expanding Capabilities
In a significant development, the program has expanded its capabilities to include the collection and recycling of Polystyrene (PS6) products, such as cell plug trays and punnets. This expansion is made possible through investments in technology, collection methods, and new processing equipment. Garden City Plastics introduces a new range of Cell Plug Tray products that are 100% closed loop recyclable as part of the Plastic Smart Program, contributing to a sustainable and innovative future in the Australian Nursery and Garden Industry.
Bunnings Educate Consumers
Education and reach are key pillars of the ongoing success of the Plastic Smart Program. Did you know that empty plant pots can’t be accepted at most council recycling facilities? To help with this, Bunnings is now collecting used plastic plant pots and other plant packaging (such as stakes and labels) at selected stores.
