- Amblypelta lutescens ssp. lutescens
The banana-spotting bug (Amblypelta lutescens lutescens) is a native Australian insect and a significant pest of tropical and subtropical horticultural crops.
Identification
-
Appearance: Adults are approximately 15 mm long with a slender, yellow-green to brown body. They have long, slender antennae and distinctive black spots on their backs.
-
Life Cycle: The species undergoes five nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. Eggs are pale green and laid singly on flowers, fruit, or foliage.
Host Plants and Damage
-
Host Plants: Common hosts include avocado, macadamia, custard apple, guava, lychee, passionfruit, pawpaw, and mango.
-
Damage: Feeding on soft young shoots and small fruit causes shoot dieback and contaminates the sap, which can travel down the shoot internally. Budwood attacked by BSB does not bond with rootstock during grafting.
Distribution
Amblypelta lutescens lutescens is found along Australia's east coast, from approximately 10°S to 27°S latitude.
️ Management Strategies
-
Monitoring: Regularly inspect crops for signs of feeding damage and presence of the bugs.
-
Cultural Controls: Maintain tree health through proper spacing, watering, and fertilization.
-
Chemical Controls: Use insecticides as a last resort, following local agricultural guidelines.
-
Biological Controls: Encourage natural predators such as parasitic wasps and predatory beetles.
