Banana rust thrips (Chaetanaphothrips signipennis) are small, sap-sucking insects that are a significant pest for banana crops.


Identification

  • Appearance: Tiny, slender insects (1–1.5 mm), typically brown to dark brown.

  • Wings: They have fringed wings and are capable of flight.

  • Larvae: Pale in color and smaller than adults.

This adult thrips is slender, measuring approximately 1.5 mm in length, and exhibits a creamy yellow to golden brown coloration with delicate, feathery wings. The front margin of the wings is fringed with black hairs, creating a characteristic longitudinal black stripe down the middle of the abdomen. Two eye-like dark patches at the base of the wings are distinctive features of the adult rust thrips.


Damage to Banana Plants

  • Primary Damage: Cosmetic damage to banana fruit peels.
